They were called the sons of Vichitra, though they sprouted from Vyasa’s seed and were raised by Bhisma, Satyavati’s stepson.

Disappointed with these two sons, Satyavati wanted Ambika to go to Vyasa again. But Ambika sent her maid. And the maid bore a wonderful son named Vidura. He had all the royal qualities but was not allowed to be king, as he was not deemed legitimate.

This story comes from the Mahabharata.

The story explicitly speaks of the practice of ‘niyoga’— getting another man to make the wife of a dead or impotent man pregnant. Here marriage is separated from childbirth.
